Kosi Bay

The Kosi Bay Nature Reserve surrouns the Kosi lake system in northern Natal. The shores of the four lakes offer a rich diversity of vegetation and bird life. The trail circumnavigates almost the entire Kosi system and extends over four days.

On arrival you spent the first night at Nhlange base camp.T camp, like the other three, has ablutions and a kitchen with a three-plate gas cooker, pots and a kettle. The following morning you head north for the camp which overlooks the first lake, 8 km away. This is reached after wading through water thigh-deep across the lake channel which leads down to the estuary.

In the afternoon  walk of 4 km takes you to the estuary mouth where you can snorkel in the 'aquarium'.

The second day the trail heads in a southerly direction for 14 km to the Bhanga Nek campwhich is situated close to the beach.

The afternoon can be spent swimming and snorkeling or fishing on the beach.

During the turtle survey season you are taken on a turtlespotting walk in the evening to watch the females lay their eggs on the beach. This is strictly controlled by Nature Conservation in season.

The third day is a walk of 7 km to Sihadla camp next to the Sihadla River. this camp resembles a small African village as each unit is made of reed and thatch.

Each camp offers the following:

5 tents raised on platforms each containing two mattresses

A fireplace with grid and fire wood

Solar panels for heating water and lighting in the tens

An abblution and kitchen area

3 Plate gas cokker, pots and a kettle

Fresh water is available at each campsite but some water should be carried to drink on the route.
